St. Jerome, 4th Century translator of The Bible

                                                                                                  
In the 4th Century St. Jerome built a monastery near the basilica of the Nativity at Bethlehem, and also houses for three communities of women. Jerome himself lived and worked in a large cave near the Saviour's birthplace. He opened a free school there and also a hospice for pilgrims, "so that," as Paula said, "should Mary and Joseph visit Bethlehem again, they would have a place to stay." ...Here bread and herbs, planted with our own hands, and milk, all country fare, furnish us plain and healthy food.
